Holobacterium is the name of this bacterium which, among other things, produce the typical red color of the saltwaters.
It was taken in Salinas Marchamalo (Murcia).
Characteristics of Holobacterium:
- Single-celled prokaryote
- Domain Archea
- Contains red membrane pigment, bacteriorhodopsin, that uses
light energy to drive ATP synthesis.
-Among the organisms that are most resistant to salty
environments. It achives this by pumping potassium ions into the
cell until achieving an equilibrium of ions inside and outsite the cell.
